How to Get Paid Your Worth
May 16, 2023So check this out; I'm in my early twenties, driven, ambitious, and ready to change the world. Perhaps, you can relate.
I applied to this leadership position, nailed the interview, and got offered $130K. Mind you, I didn't have a single person in my circle who had ever made 6 figures at the time (the more reason you need to surround yourself with people who have achieved more than you).
As an immigrant, my parents worked odd jobs earning $10-14 an hour, so little ole me being the first in my family, and in my circle of friends, to make 130K at the time was a pretty effing deal, right?
You can imagine my excitement sharing this news with my parents…beaming with pride and a sense of accomplishment. And I thought, man, I've made it!
Fast forward weeks later, I started the job and learned my department was responsible for $1.3 Billion.
My job was to ensure we not only strengthened this revenue but also increased it. Our minimum percent increase goal was 5%.
Now let me do the math for you. 5% of $1.3B is $65 Million. By the time I was leaving, we had increased the revenue by 17%, which is $221 Million.
As I climbed the corporate ladder and built my own business, I learned how extremely underpaid I was.
What I thought was an irresistible offer was actually an incredibly low-ball offer.
You see, I hadn't mastered the art of the interview at the time. I didn't know the right questions to ask to really learn about the job and how much I should be paid. I was just happy that I would be making more than before, except that was the wrong thinking.
And I know you've probably accepted a job offer paying you slightly more than you were making, but that is a Huge mistake.
I've come to learn how to truly assess your economic value, which boils down to how you help a company generate revenue and/or how you help them save money.
Now determining your economic value goes 8 layers deep, which I teach in depth in my New Course- Career Oasis.
The company offered me what they wanted to pay me. But I was too naïve to negotiate a better offer that truly matched the position and my skill set. If I could go back in time, knowing what I know now, I would have negotiated a massive increase, but at the time, it seemed unreal to even be making 6-figures in my twenties.

You think you've got a great job making great money, but you are NOT even getting paid your worth.
